What Is IFFCO Tokio Cattle Insurance 2026?

IFFCO-Tokio General Insurance, incorporated in 2000 as a joint venture between the Indian Farmers Fertiliser Cooperative (IFFCO) and Japan’s Tokio Marine Group (51:49 holding), is one of India’s most trusted rural insurance providers. Its cattle insurance product — the Pashu Dhan Bima Yojana — is specifically engineered for the livestock economy of rural India, where a single dairy cow represents an asset worth Rs.40,000 to Rs.1,50,000 and her sudden death can push a family into debt.
India’s cattle insurance market has historically been dominated by government PSU insurers, but IFFCO Tokio has carved a strong niche by combining its cooperative IFFCO network with Tokio Marine’s global underwriting expertise. In FY 2022–23 alone, the company issued over 72 lakh policies across all product lines and had a claim settlement ratio of approximately 91%, demonstrating strong operational reliability for rural policyholders. The Pashu Dhan Bima Yojana is currently the only branded individual cattle insurance policy available online under that specific scheme name from a private sector insurer in India.
IFFCO Tokio Cattle Insurance Premium Rates 2026
The IFFCO Tokio cattle insurance premium is not a flat rate — it is calculated as a percentage of the animal’s current market value, which is jointly determined by the policyholder and a licensed veterinarian at the time of purchase. IRDAI’s tariff guidelines set the cattle insurance premium range at 2% to 4% of market value per year across all insurers. Below are indicative premium estimates for the most common dairy cattle in 2026:
| Cattle Type / Breed | Typical Market Value (2026) | Annual Premium @ 2% | Annual Premium @ 4% | 3-Year Premium @ 3% |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Indigenous Desi Cow (Gir, Sahiwal) | Rs.30,000 – Rs.50,000 | Rs.600 – Rs.1,000 | Rs.1,200 – Rs.2,000 | Rs.2,700 – Rs.4,500 |
| HF (Holstein Friesian) Crossbred Cow | Rs.60,000 – Rs.90,000 | Rs.1,200 – Rs.1,800 | Rs.2,400 – Rs.3,600 | Rs.5,400 – Rs.8,100 |
| Jersey Crossbred Cow | Rs.50,000 – Rs.75,000 | Rs.1,000 – Rs.1,500 | Rs.2,000 – Rs.3,000 | Rs.4,500 – Rs.6,750 |
| Murrah Buffalo | Rs.70,000 – Rs.1,20,000 | Rs.1,400 – Rs.2,400 | Rs.2,800 – Rs.4,800 | Rs.6,300 – Rs.10,800 |
| Pure HF / Exotic Imported Cow | Rs.1,00,000 – Rs.1,50,000 | Rs.2,000 – Rs.3,000 | Rs.4,000 – Rs.6,000 | Rs.9,000 – Rs.13,500 |
Important note on premiums: The actual premium may differ slightly based on your district’s risk classification (flood-prone vs non-flood-prone areas), the animal’s age, whether it has been vaccinated against FMD and other notifiable diseases, and whether you are purchasing under a group/cooperative scheme. Animals that have already been tagged under an NLDB or State Livestock Development Board subsidy programme may attract additional government premium support of up to 50%. Contact IFFCO Tokio on 1800-103-5499 for a precise quote.
What Is Covered Under IFFCO Tokio Pashu Dhan Bima 2026?
The IFFCO Tokio Pashu Dhan Bima Yojana provides a lump-sum indemnity payment equal to the sum insured (up to 100% of market value) if your insured cattle dies due to any of the following covered causes:
- 🌊 Natural accidents: Death due to floods, drought (famine), earthquakes, landslides, lightning, and other Acts of God are fully covered — critical for farmers in Bihar, Assam, Odisha, and other flood-prone states.
- 🚑 Accidental causes: Any death arising from an unforeseeable, accidental event — road accidents, falls from heights, snake bites, electrocution — are covered under the “accidental in origin” clause.
- 🦠 Diseases: Death due to diagnosed diseases such as Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD), Hemorrhagic Septicemia, Black Quarter, and other infections are covered, provided the animal was properly vaccinated and the disease was not pre-existing.
- ⚕️ Surgical operations: If the insured animal undergoes a veterinary surgical procedure that results in death, the claim is admissible — a unique feature not found in all livestock policies.
- 🔥 Terrorist acts and riot risks: Deaths arising from terrorist activity, strike action, riot, or civil commotion (SRCC) are covered under this policy — providing protection in civil unrest situations.
The sum insured equals the independently assessed market value of the animal at the time of policy purchase and does not exceed 100% of that value. Market value depends on breed, milk yield, age, location, and prevailing local cattle market prices.
Exclusions – What IFFCO Tokio Cattle Insurance Does NOT Cover
Understanding the exclusions is just as important as knowing the coverage. Many IFFCO Tokio cattle insurance claims are rejected because policyholders are unaware of the following conditions. Read each exclusion carefully before purchasing:
- 🚫 Partial or temporary disability: Only death is covered. If your cow is injured and permanently disabled but does not die, no claim is payable. This is a major gap for farmers who may incur large veterinary bills on a disabled animal.
- 🚫 Theft or missing animals: If your cattle is stolen or goes missing, no claim applies. Cattle theft is explicitly excluded from IFFCO Tokio’s coverage.
- 🚫 Negligence and unskilled treatment: If death results from careless handling, use of the animal for purposes not stated in the policy, or unskilled/quack veterinary treatment administered without the company’s consent, the claim will be denied.
- 🚫 Pre-existing diseases: Any disease or injury that existed before the policy start date is not covered. A health certificate from a licensed vet is mandatory before purchase to establish the animal’s clean health status.
- 🚫 15-day waiting period: Death due to disease contracted within the first 15 days from the policy inception date is not covered (unless it is a renewal without any break).
- 🚫 Air or sea transport beyond 80 km: If the insured animal dies during long-distance air or sea transport, the claim is void. Transit by road within permissible distances is generally acceptable.
- 🚫 No Tag – No Claim: IFFCO Tokio strictly enforces this rule. If the ear-tag or RFID tag assigned to the insured animal at the time of policy purchase is missing at the time of death, the claim will be rejected regardless of other evidence.
- 🚫 Pleuropneumonia exclusion in parts of Assam: Death due to Contagious Bovine Pleuropneumonia in Lakhimpur and Sibsagar districts of Assam is excluded due to endemic risk in those zones.
- 🚫 War, nuclear exposure, intentional killing: Deaths resulting from war, nuclear contamination, or intentional slaughter (except under legal or veterinarian supervision) are not covered.
Who Should Buy IFFCO Tokio Cattle Insurance 2026?
The IFFCO Tokio Pashu Dhan Bima Yojana is not just for large dairy farm owners. Here are 8 specific profiles for whom this policy is a smart financial decision in 2026:
- 🐄 Small and marginal farmers who own 1–3 HF or Jersey crossbred cows and depend on daily milk sales for household income — a single animal death can be catastrophic without insurance.
- 🏦 KCC (Kisan Credit Card) borrowers who have taken cattle loans from SBI, PNB, or regional rural banks — banks often mandate cattle insurance as a loan condition, and IFFCO Tokio is an IRDAI-approved partner for this.
- 🤝 Dairy cooperative society members (AMUL, Sudha, Parag, or district cooperative dairy members) who can access group cattle insurance at lower rates through the cooperative channel.
- 🚜 Agri-entrepreneurs running small dairy farms with 5–20 animals and a business investment of Rs.3–15 lakh who need asset protection against sudden livestock mortality.
- 👩🌾 Women self-help group (SHG) members under NABARD or state government rural livelihood missions who have received cattle as livelihood support and need to protect the government’s investment.
- 🌾 Farmers in flood-prone districts of Bihar, Assam, Odisha, Uttar Pradesh, and West Bengal where annual floods pose a high risk of livestock loss — natural accidents including floods are a core covered peril.
- 📋 Farmers applying under government schemes like AHIDF (Animal Husbandry Infrastructure Development Fund), NLM (National Livestock Mission), or Rashtriya Gokul Mission, where cattle insurance may be a mandatory or recommended prerequisite for subsidy disbursement.
- 🧑💼 FPO (Farmer Producer Organisation) members operating a collective dairy business who need insurance for all member animals at scale — IFFCO Tokio’s Bima Kendra rural agent network can facilitate bulk policy issuance at the village level.
Documents Required to Buy IFFCO Tokio Livestock Insurance
The documentation process for IFFCO Tokio cattle insurance is straightforward but must be completed accurately. Missing documents — especially the health certificate or ear-tag record — are the most common reason for claim rejection later. Keep the following 5 documents ready before applying:
- 📝 Duly signed Proposal Form: The insurance application form, available on iffcotokio.co.in or from your nearest Bima Kendra agent. Must include accurate details of breed, age, sex, milk yield, and market value.
- 🩺 Veterinary Health Certificate: A fitness certificate from a government-registered or IFFCO Tokio-empanelled veterinarian confirming the animal is healthy, free of pre-existing disease, and has been vaccinated against FMD, HS, and BQ as required.
- 🏷️ Ear-tag or RFID Tag Number: The unique identification tag fixed on the animal’s ear at the time of policy issuance. This is the most critical document — “No Tag, No Claim” is strictly enforced.
- 🧾 Proof of Purchase / Ownership: Original purchase receipt, passbook entry, or panchayat-certified document showing that you are the legal owner of the insured animal and its acquisition cost.
- 📷 Recent Photograph of the Cattle: A clear photograph showing the animal’s ear-tag, taken at the time of policy purchase. This is used to identify the animal at the time of a claim.
How to Buy IFFCO Tokio Cattle Insurance Online – Step by Step
Buying the IFFCO Tokio Pashu Dhan Bima Yojana online is simpler than ever in 2026. You can purchase it through the IFFCO Tokio website, through their rural Bima Kendra agents, or through empanelled cooperative societies. Follow these 7 steps:
- 🌐 Visit the official website: Go to iffcotokio.co.in/micro-rural-insurance/pashu-dhan-bima-yojana and click on “Get Quote” or enter your mobile number to start the purchase process.
- 📋 Fill the Proposal Form: Enter your name, address, Aadhaar number, and detailed animal information — breed, sex, age (in months), current market value, and milk production per day.
- 🩺 Arrange Veterinary Health Certificate: Before the policy is issued, a vet will inspect your animal and issue the mandatory health certificate. This may be done offline at your farm or veterinary hospital.
- 🏷️ Animal Tagging: The insurer’s representative or an authorised vet will affix an ear-tag on the cattle. Photograph the tag clearly and note the tag number — preserve this in your records permanently.
- 💳 Pay the Premium: Premium payment can be made online via UPI, net banking, debit/credit card, or in cash through a Bima Kendra agent. You will receive a premium receipt immediately upon payment.
- 📄 Receive Policy Document: The policy document is issued digitally and can be downloaded from the IFFCO Tokio portal. Save a PDF copy and also request a printed copy from your agent for field records.
- 📱 Register on Customer App: Download the “IFFCO Tokio – Bima” customer app (Android / iOS) and register your policy number to track claim status, renew on time, and access customer support directly.
IFFCO Tokio Cattle Insurance Claim Process 2026
When a covered animal dies, the claim must be reported immediately — delay is the second biggest reason after missing ear-tags for claim rejection. Follow these 6 steps for a successful IFFCO Tokio cattle insurance claim in 2026:
- 📞 Intimate IFFCO Tokio immediately: Call toll-free 1800-103-5499, email [email protected], or WhatsApp on 7993407777 to register your claim. Provide your policy number, animal ear-tag number, and brief description of the incident. Obtain a Claim Reference Number.
- 🩺 Arrange a Post-Mortem by a Licensed Vet: Within 24–48 hours, a government or empanelled veterinarian must conduct a post-mortem examination and issue a report certifying the cause of death. Do not bury or dispose of the carcass until this is completed and photographed.
- 📸 Photograph the Carcass and Ear-Tag: Take clear photographs of the dead animal showing the intact ear-tag in position. This is the single most important evidence for the IFFCO Tokio claim surveyor to verify the animal’s identity.
- 📂 Submit Claim Documents: Submit to your nearest IFFCO Tokio branch or upload on the portal: (a) Duly filled claim form; (b) Original policy document / policy number; (c) Veterinary post-mortem report; (d) Photographs of dead animal with ear-tag visible; (e) Vaccination certificate; (f) Bank account passbook copy (for claim payment).
- 🔎 Surveyor Visit: IFFCO Tokio will depute a licensed claim surveyor to visit your farm, verify the ear-tag record against the policy, inspect the carcass photographs, and validate the post-mortem report. Cooperate fully and provide all original documents at this stage.
- 💰 Claim Settlement: After document verification and surveyor report approval, the claim amount (up to 100% of the sum insured) is credited directly to the policyholder’s registered bank account — typically within 7–15 working days after submission of complete documents.

High-Value Livestock & Dairy Insurance Terms You Must Know
Understanding these 10 key terms will help you evaluate any cattle or livestock insurance policy in India, compare plans accurately, and avoid being misled by agents. These terms also correspond to high-CPC search queries that dairy farmers and agri-entrepreneurs actively search for in 2026:
- 🔑 Pashu Dhan Bima Yojana: The official name of IFFCO Tokio’s cattle insurance policy. “Pashu Dhan” literally means “animal wealth” in Hindi. It is sold exclusively by IFFCO-Tokio General Insurance in India under this branded scheme name.
- 🔑 Sum Insured: The maximum amount the insurer will pay as a claim settlement. For IFFCO Tokio cattle insurance, it equals up to 100% of the animal’s market value as assessed by a licensed vet at policy inception — not a fixed government-assigned value.
- 🔑 IRDAI Livestock Tariff: The Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India prescribes a standard tariff band of 2–4% of market value for cattle insurance premiums across all insurers in India. No insurer can charge less than 2% or more than 4% for standard livestock coverage.
- 🔑 No Tag – No Claim: A strict IFFCO Tokio cattle insurance rule that means if the ear-tag or RFID tag is not visible on the dead animal’s carcass at the time of claim inspection, the claim will be rejected outright, regardless of all other documentation. This prevents fraud but also penalises careless tag management.
- 🔑 Claim Settlement Ratio (CSR): The percentage of total claims received that an insurer successfully pays out in a given financial year. IFFCO Tokio’s overall CSR for FY 2022–25 was approximately 91%, in line with the industry average of 91.22%.
- 🔑 NLDB / SLDB Subsidy Cattle: Animals subsidised under the National Livestock Development Board or State Livestock Development Board schemes are called “schemed animals.” They are eligible for IFFCO Tokio cattle insurance, and state government may co-share up to 50% of the premium as subsidy.
- 🔑 Livestock Insurance Scheme (Government): A Central Government scheme under the Department of Animal Husbandry & Dairying (DAHD) that provides up to 50% premium subsidy to farmers for cattle insurance — facilitated through empanelled insurers including IFFCO Tokio.
- 🔑 HF (Holstein Friesian) Cow: The most common high-yield crossbred dairy cow in India, giving 20–30 litres of milk per day. A mid-grade HF cow costs Rs.60,000–Rs.90,000 in 2026 — making IFFCO Tokio cattle insurance at Rs.1,200–Rs.3,600/year a very cost-effective risk cover.
- 🔑 Post-Mortem Report: A mandatory document from a licensed veterinarian confirming the cause of death of the insured animal. Without this report, IFFCO Tokio cattle insurance claims cannot be processed under any circumstance.
- 🔑 Bima Kendra: IFFCO Tokio’s single-person rural insurance service centres, designed to bring policy issuance and basic claims support directly to villages and small towns. These agents are the primary point of contact for purchasing and renewing IFFCO Tokio cattle insurance in rural areas.
Fraud & Agent Warning – Common Scams in Cattle Insurance 2026
India’s rural insurance market unfortunately attracts a significant number of fraudulent agents who misrepresent cattle insurance policies. Here are the 5 most common fraud patterns reported and how to protect yourself when buying IFFCO Tokio cattle insurance or any livestock policy:
- ⚠️ Fake “Government Scheme” agents: Beware of individuals who claim to be “government insurance officials” collecting premium for a “free cattle insurance scheme.” IFFCO Tokio is a private insurer and does not send government officials to collect premiums. Always demand an IRDAI-registered agent licence number.
- ⚠️ Verbal buyback or milk guarantee promises: Some unscrupulous agents promise “buyback of sick cows at full value” or “free fodder if the policy is taken.” These verbal promises have no legal standing — only the printed policy document matters.
- ⚠️ Large upfront “registration” or “inspection” fees: The only legitimate payment is the policy premium itself. If an agent demands a separate cash payment for “registration,” “tag fitting,” or “vet inspection fee” in addition to the quoted premium, walk away and report to IRDAI’s Bima Bharosa portal.
- ⚠️ Policy documents not issued within 48 hours: After premium payment, IFFCO Tokio issues a policy document within 24–48 hours. If your agent delays this, call 1800-103-5499 directly to check policy status using your mobile number.
- ⚠️ Missing ear-tag at policy inception: Some fraudulent agents collect premium without actually arranging for the mandatory ear-tagging, meaning any future claim will automatically fail under the “No Tag – No Claim” rule. Always verify the ear-tag is physically affixed before considering the policy active.
For complaints against insurance agents or to report fraud, contact IRDAI directly via their official grievance portal at bimabharosa.irdai.gov.in or call the IRDAI helpline at 155255 / 1800-4254-732. You can also raise a formal complaint on the IFFCO Tokio Grievance Redressal page.

IFFCO Tokio cattle insurance, officially called Pashu Dhan Bima Yojana, is a rural livestock insurance policy that covers indigenous and crossbred cattle owned by farmers, cooperative societies, and dairy farms against death due to accidents, diseases, natural calamities, surgical operations, and riot or civil commotion risks. It is the only privately branded online cattle scheme of its type in India and is available for direct purchase at iffcotokio.co.in without requiring a physical agent visit.
What is the premium rate for IFFCO Tokio cattle insurance 2026?
The IFFCO Tokio cattle insurance premium ranges from 2% to 4% of the animal’s current market value per year, as per IRDAI’s standard livestock insurance tariff. For a typical HF cow valued at Rs.70,000, the annual premium works out to Rs.1,400–Rs.2,800. For a Murrah buffalo at Rs.1,00,000 market value, the premium would be Rs.2,000–Rs.4,000 per year. What is covered under IFFCO Tokio Pashu Dhan Bima Yojana?
IFFCO Tokio Pashu Dhan Bima Yojana covers death of insured cattle due to natural accidents (floods, earthquakes, famine), accidental unpredictable events, diseases (including FMD, HS, Black Quarter), surgical operations, terrorist acts, and strike, riot or civil commotion (SRCC) risks. The sum insured is up to 100% of the market value of the cattle at inception. Coverage is available for both indigenous desi breeds and crossbred exotic varieties like HF and Jersey.
What is NOT covered (exclusions) under IFFCO Tokio cattle insurance?
IFFCO Tokio cattle insurance does NOT cover: partial or temporary disability, theft or missing animals, death from wilful negligence or unskilled treatment, pre-existing conditions, death within the first 15 days of policy inception, transport beyond 80 km by air or sea, and war or nuclear-related deaths. The “No Tag – No Claim” rule is strictly enforced — any claim where the animal’s ear-tag cannot be verified on the carcass will be rejected without exception.
How do I file a claim under IFFCO Tokio cattle insurance?
To file an IFFCO Tokio cattle insurance claim: call 1800-103-5499 immediately after the animal’s death to register the claim; arrange a post-mortem by a licensed vet within 24–48 hours and photograph the carcass with the ear-tag clearly visible; submit the claim form, post-mortem report, vaccination certificate, ear-tag photo, and bank passbook copy to your nearest IFFCO Tokio branch or via the customer app; a claim surveyor will visit to verify documents; and the settlement amount is credited to your bank account within 7–15 working days.

Both IFFCO Tokio and New India Assurance offer cattle insurance at the same IRDAI-regulated premium of 2–4% of market value, with similar coverage for death due to accidents and diseases. IFFCO Tokio has a stronger online purchase process, faster digital claim settlement (7–15 days vs 15–30 days), a dedicated rural Bima Kendra network, and a customer mobile app. New India Assurance has a larger government-backed district branch presence and may be preferred by farmers linked to PSU bank KCC loans. For digital-savvy farmers in 2026, IFFCO Tokio is generally the more convenient option.

Without a valid ear-tag at the time of purchase, claims at death will be automatically rejected under the “No Tag – No Claim” rule. Always confirm the ear-tag is physically affixed before paying your premium.
Can I get a government subsidy on IFFCO Tokio cattle insurance premium?
Yes. Under the Central Government’s Livestock Insurance Scheme (LIS) administered by the Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying (DAHD), eligible farmers can receive a 50% subsidy on cattle insurance premiums for up to 2 animals per household. This subsidy is available to SC/ST farmers and BPL category farmers as priority beneficiaries. IFFCO Tokio is one of the empanelled insurers under government-linked livestock insurance schemes. Contact your nearest District Animal Husbandry office or IFFCO Tokio Bima Kendra agent to apply for the subsidised scheme in your district.
