In addition to the monthly stipend, every PMRF scholar receives a research grant of Rs.2 lakh per year — totalling Rs.10 lakh over the full 5-year fellowship period. This research grant is intended to cover contingency expenses, laboratory materials, academic books, journal subscriptions, equipment, field visits, and conference travel. Institute overhead is charged on the research grant as per each institute’s existing norms.

The research grant can be carried forward across years. For scholars submitting their thesis on or after November 1, 2022, the research grant can be utilized right up to the date of the final Viva Voce examination or the end of the PMRF tenure, whichever is earlier. Any unspent balance must be refunded — with a 6-month post-PMRF window allowed for specific permitted expenditures such as conference costs, Q1 journal open-access publication fees, and IP protection costs.

Scholars admitted under Lateral Entry receive a tenure shorter than 5 years, depending on when they join relative to their PhD start date. Their total payable research grant varies from Rs.6 lakh to Rs.9 lakh depending on their lateral entry group. The monthly stipend values remain identical to Direct Entry (Rs.70,000–Rs.80,000) based on which year of PhD they are in at the time of PMRF selection.

PMRF 2026 Eligibility Criteria — Direct Entry vs Lateral Entry

PMRF offers two distinct entry channels — Direct Entry and Lateral Entry. Understanding which channel applies to you is the first and most critical step before applying. Both channels require different academic conditions and have different application windows.

Direct Entry Eligibility — PMRF 2026

You qualify for Direct Entry if you satisfy any ONE of the following three criteria within the preceding 3 years from the date of application submission:

• Criterion (a): Completed or pursuing final year of a 4/5-year UG, 5-year integrated M.Tech, 2-year M.Sc, or 5-year dual degree in Science & Technology from IISc, IITs, NITs, IISERs, IIEST, or centrally funded IIITs — with a CGPA of at least 8.0 (on a 10-point scale). For integrated/dual degree programmes where separate UG and PG CGPAs are awarded, only the UG portion (first 4 years) CGPA is considered. You must also have been selected into the PhD programme at a PMRF Granting Institute.
• Criterion (b): Completed or pursuing the final year of similar programmes from any other recognized Indian institution not covered in (a) — with a minimum CGPA of 8.0 AND any ONE of: GATE score of 650 or above in the relevant subject, UGC/CSIR JRF rank of 100 or less, or an NBHM fellowship. You must also have been selected into the PhD programme at a PMRF Granting Institute. (Note: Candidates with a foreign university degree are eligible under this criterion if all other conditions are met.)
• Criterion (c): Qualified GATE and currently pursuing or have completed M.Tech/MS by Research at a PMRF Granting Institute — with a minimum CGPA of 8.0 and at least 4 completed courses at the time of application. You must also have been selected into the PhD programme at a PMRF Granting Institute.

Important exclusions for Direct Entry: Candidates who converted from Masters to PhD programme are NOT eligible. Integrated PhD students completing their Masters requirement are NOT eligible for Direct Entry at that point.
